The Kawarthas & Hastings Highlands is home to several of Ontario’s most beautiful parks and nature reserves. Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park is Ontario’s largest park south of Algonquin which is located in Hastings Highlands. You can enjoy solitude, tranquillity and dark night skies in this newly established park and camp under the stars. Like most parks in Ontario, there is no shortage of animal life, rugged rolling landscape and small lakes for you to explore.

Silent Lake park is about 10 min north of Apsley, Ontario which offers winter camping in Yurts as well as summer camping and hiking trails.

Petroglyphs Provincial Park about 20 min south of Apsley is the largest known concentration of Aboriginal rock carvings (Petroglyphs) in Canada, depicting turtle, snakes, birds, humans and more; this sacred site is known as “The Teaching Rocks” There is a Learning Place Visitors Centre where you can discover the traditions of the Ojibwa (Nishnaabe) people through the teachings of the medicine wheel. You can also visit McGinnis Lake that has a bright blue/green colour that is unique to this area because of the limestone bottom and is one of only a handful of meromictic (layers of water that don’t intermix) lakes in Canada. This park is also home to Ontario’s only lizard the Five-lined Skink.

Home of the Trent Severn Waterway makes having a cottage on some of these amazing lakes an experience all on its own being able to hop in your boat and go for a day travel through the canal system or a week adventure, the possibilities are endless.

Stoney lake (also known as Stony Lake) is the end of the line for the Trent Severn headed north but what a beautiful lake it is. With several restaurants that you can get to by boat, you will never get bored with an evening or afternoon out. This lake has a very deep and rich heritage in this area and has some of the most beautiful cottages, landscape and fish habitat of the Kawarthas.

Moving a little north you have several more lakes including but not limited to – Big Cedar Lake, Mount Julian Lake, Loon Call Lake, Wolf Lake, Long Lake, Jack Lake (also known as Jacks Lake) Chandos Lake, Anstruther Lake, Methuen Lake and Eels lake.

Jack Lake and Chandos Lake are two of the most sought after lakes in North Kawartha area, both very unique in their own way. A bit further north we have Paudash Lake, Baptiste Lake, Papineau Lake, and beautiful Kamaniskeg Lake. A little to the West we have Mississauga, Catchacoma & Gold Lakes which are part of a 7 lake chain. I could go on and on with the lakes I love but you would get bored of reading!  Please see our Lakes page for more info and if there is a lake you love and don’t see please ask.
